We are proudly a teaching clinic, we believe that this improves that standard of care provided in the clinic and contributes to the next generation of doctors. As such, we may have medical and nursing students sitting in with our doctors and nurses. We will obtain your consent of whether you will allow students to be present prior to your consult.

All our doctors are experienced in providing medical student education with many receiving Excellence in Teaching Awards. We believe that students should learn in a hands on manner.

At Sapphire Clinic, we host:

• Australian National University medical students in their 3rd year (out of a 4 year degree)

• John Flynn Scholars who are medical students who return annually over their entire course from any Australian Medical School

• Elective students in their senior years who apply from any Australian Medical School

Dr Geoffrey Thomas explains why we have medical students….

“Many regular patients will be used to the presence of medical students during their consultations and we would like to express our great appreciation for this. We host students as we believe in contributing to training the next generation of doctors. Students learn facts, but we also hope to pass on our belief that patients are all individuals to be respected as much more than a cough, ear ache or painful hip!

There is no substitute for direct patient contact, as students learn to take histories, develop empathy, practise clinical examinations, improve medical reasoning and formulate case presentations.

The Doctor is regularly challenged by questions from the students, so we need to be up to date and logical in our thought processes. Teaching definitely makes for a better doctor!

Our students come from all over Australia, we have had students from Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle and Townsville. Most come from Canberra and these students have all done other degrees before studying Medicine, while others are doing undergraduate courses.They immerse themselves into our local community in their time with us.

Finally, some of our students come back to us as GP trainees and some even stay – I am proud to say that Dr Yin Lee originally came to the clinic as a student and we are very glad that she has returned to join us.

So, when you allow a student to join the consultation you should feel proud of your contribution to teaching the next generation of doctors and one day you may see them again in the clinic as a fully fledged doctor!”
